FAQs

HOW DO I OPERATE MY FAN WITH THE WIRED WALL CONTROLLER?

To start the fan, turn the control knob clockwise.

Note: When the fan is turned on, the LED indicator at the top of the controller is lit. The LED will flash an error code if there is a problem with the fan.

To stop the fan, turn the control knob counterclockwise.

To increase fan speed, turn the control knob clockwise.

To decrease fan speed, turn the control knob counterclockwise.

Note: The fan may take 30–60 seconds to start rotating after it is turned on. It is normal to see “cogging” (abrupt direction changes) as the fan positions itself relative to the motor stator.

HOW DO I OPERATE MY FAN WITH THE WIRELESS WALL CONTROLLER?

To start the fan, press the On button. The fan will turn on to 100% speed.

To stop the fan, press the Off button.

To increase fan speed, press the Increase Speed button.

To decrease fan speed, press the Decrease Speed button.

By default, pressing the center button sets the fan speed to 50%.

To program a preferred speed setting:

  1. Use the speed adjustment buttons to select the desired fan speed.
  2. Press and hold the center button for approximately six seconds until the LED flashes to save the setting.

Note: The fan may take 30–60 seconds to start rotating after it is turned on. It is normal to see “cogging” (abrupt direction changes) as the fan positions itself relative to the motor stator.

MY FAN WILL NOT START.

Verify the following:

  • All wires are securely connected.
  • The blue wire and the yellow wire on the controller input cable are wired together (the fire alarm shutdown circuit is closed). To restart the fan and clear the fire fault, close the circuit and turn off power to the fan for 60 seconds. View fan wiring details:
    • Essence
  • The wall controller has power.
  • Supply power is adequate and functional.
  • All fuses are functional.

If the fan still does not start, contact Customer Service.

HOW DO I REVERSE MY FAN?

Big Ass Fans recommends operating the fan in the forward (FWD) direction. The fan should be rotating counterclockwise when viewed from below.

To reverse the direction of the fan:

  1. Disconnect the fan from power.
  2. Select the direction of the fan using the direction selector switch located on the fan’s cover plate assembly.
  3. Reapply power to the fan.
Controller is on and the fan will not spin.

Isolate power for 3 minutes, turn the controller back on and let the fan restart. The restart will take a few minutes. If still does not spin, contact customer service.

Fan isn't changing speed.

Check that the controller isn’t able to spin 360. If it can spin 360, the controller will need to be replaced.

HOW DO I REPLACE A FUSE ON MY FAN?

To replace a fuse:

  • Disconnect the fan from power.
  • Remove the four screws to open the electronics cover.
  • Gently twist and pull out the fuse holder and replace the fuse.
  • Reinstall the fuse holder.
  • Reattach the electronics cover.

Suitable fuse replacements:

  • Bussman S505 Series
  • Littelfuse 215 Series
  • Mersen Fuse GSF
  • Bel Fuse 5HT
A POPPING NOISE IS COMING FROM MY FAN.

Airfoil noise is a result of airfoils that are not tightened to the specified torque.

Switch off power at the switchboard and lock the circuit breaker out. (If it cannot be locked, fasten a prominent warning device.) Tighten the airfoil hardware to 29 ft·lb (39.3 N·m). If popping still occurs, verify that the airfoils are not contacting each other. If the airfoils are contacting each other, please contact Customer Service.

MY FAN WOBBLES DURING OPERATION.
  • Verify that the mounting structure is rigid enough to support the fan and that the fan is not being exposed to external air forces.
  • If guy wires were installed, confirm proper installation. If guy wires were not installed, contact Customer Service.
FAN CONTINUOUSLY CUTS OUT.

If the fan is cutting out on a regular basis it may be due to the location of the installation. The Essence will fault if gusts of wind hit the fan, if a ball strikes it or if it is knocked in anyway. If the fan is installed at a gym where they have a roller door, they will probably note that the fan will only cut out when the door is open. To resolve, the RPM may need to be adjusted so that the fan can handle the extra load caused by wind gusts (eg. 10ft Essence should have it’s switches changed to a 12ft)

My Fan isn’t functioning.

If your Essence isn’t running but it isn’t flashing, please check they are leaving it on for over 2mins before turning it off. On its initial start-up it will require longer to get moving.

Essence Fan will not function unless the airfoils are installed.

Ask the electrician to check the wiring of the Controller – specifically, the RJ45 cable. See Essence Wiring Options.

If a fault continues after the above connections have been checked, ask them to remove the cover from the motor and ensure all terminals are plugged in, Fuses are in working order and Dip switches are set correctly.

Are the “Run Enable” wires connected together? This is the Blue and Yellow wires on the main control cable that goes up through the Extension Tube.

If in a Commercial establishment, these two wires would be used in conjunction with a Fire Relay to disable the fan in the event of a fire. Not having this connected properly will result in no response from the fan and a green LED flashing 7 times on the Extension Tube. (See Install Manual for more information on adding this relay in.)

In a Residential establishment, these two wires would be tied together.
