The Big Ass Fan Company today announced it has sold its 100,000th fan, a milestone driven largely by the 14-year-old company’s recent entrance and rapid growth in residential and commercial markets.

“Big Ass Fans initially focused on keeping industrial buildings comfortable, but our customers consistently told us they wanted smaller versions of our fans for their homes, churches or favorite restaurants,” said Founder and CEO Carey Smith. “We’ve engineered innovative and eye-catching fans that bring our reputation of energy efficiency and quality into every space.”

Big Ass Fans® entered the commercial market, which includes health clubs, restaurants and hotels, in 2008 with the 12- to 20-ft. diameter Element fan and followed that a year later with the 8- to 12-ft. Isis®, suitable for both home and businesses. In 2012, the company launched the 60-inch Haiku®, the reinvention of the residential ceiling fan that has won 11 international design awards. Haiku features a revolutionary motor offering nearly twice the efficiency of typical ceiling fans, and was recognized by ENERGY STAR® as the world’s most efficient residential ceiling fan.

“With its sleek appearance and groundbreaking technology, Haiku is the newest evidence that behind the quirky name is a company serious about innovation,” Smith said. “We look forward to bringing more innovation into the commercial and residential markets.”

Big Ass Fans has become a major employer and economic player in Central Kentucky. Between 2009 and 2012, the company’s annual revenue increased from $34 million to $87 million, and the number of employees nearly tripled to 350 individuals.

Isaac Fedyniak, a member of the growing engineering team at Big Ass Fans®, has been named to Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s 2013 40 Under 40 Award. This exclusive list is published annually, recognizing building industry professionals age 40 and younger who stand out in all aspects of their lives.

Fedyniak, who recently began developing a new Building Solutions division of Big Ass Fans, combines his academic knowledge and technical skills with a practical understanding of design requirements to excel in his field. Previously a senior project manager and electrical engineer with a consulting engineer firm, he played a key role in numerous high profile projects across the country, including several of the first net-zero facilities in the country.

Outside of work, Fedyniak serves as a mentor for students at the University of Kentucky and throughout the Fayette County Public School system. As the industry liaison for Transylvania University’s Sustainability Council, a volunteer position specifically created for him due to his knowledge of sustainable practices, Fedyniak wrote the University’s Climate Action Plan and advises on greenhouse gas mitigation efforts.

Individuals named to Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s 40 Under 40 list were nominated by professional colleagues or mentors and judged based on commitment to excellence in their academic, professional, personal and community involvement.

“Now in its sixth year, the competition is becoming more intense,” said Amara Rozgus, editor-in-chief of Consulting-Specifying Engineer. “Each winner truly deserves this award. Through project management, finding unique engineering solutions, volunteering, mentoring and much more, these winners are guiding the building and engineering community.”

Fedyniak is the second Big Ass employee to receive this honor. Christian Taber, senior applications engineer at the company, was named to the 40 Under 40 list in 2011.

Editors examined and ranked products based on their money-saving qualities, including minimal energy consumption and reduction of HVAC.

In a typical application, Isis saves customers up to 30% by circulating air to equalize temperatures in the winter and allowing the thermostat setpoint to be raised in the summer. In new construction, Isis can be incorporated in a materials minimization strategy that reduces ductwork and air conditioning capacity.

Isis revolves at 1/5 the speed of a standard ceiling fan, creating a massive, non-disruptive air current. Operating at 10 times the efficiency of a standard ceiling fan, Isis is simply the perfect air circulation solution for your large residential or commercial space.
