Big Ass Fans Lends Itself to Iowa Flood Victims
June 20, 2008
Flood relief efforts are underway in Iowa City and the unlikeliest of aid, a Big Ass Fan from Lexington, KY, has been delivered to expedite the drying process at the 35,000 square foot Parkview Church. Deacon Corwin Gingerich plans to have the fan installed today and hopes they can salvage as much as possible.
"We began prepping for the flood June 8th,” Gingerich explains. “We started preparing ourselves by sandbagging the church and erecting a five foot wall. Eventually, we were told the water would be too high to stop, and we should take anything out that we could."
As the water recedes, Gingerich hopes they can still salvage the church building. In order to help do so, Big Ass Fans has donated a mobile eight foot vertical fan to accelerate the process. Drying the wood floors and structural beams is a time-sensitive venture, and if the process takes more than a week or two, the building may be lost.
Despite the pressure of time, Gingerich is optimistic about the attempt to recoup. The salvaging efforts have been community-wide, and everybody is pulling together during this difficult time. "Our parking lot was used by over 200 volunteers who helped to build walls," Gingerich said. "We hope to have a similar effort during the clean up process."
Big Ass Fans also remains positive about the likelihood of relief and company President Carey Smith was eager to help. "This is a no-brainer. Big Ass Fans is accustomed to helping where we can, and if successful we want them to share the fan with as many people as possible," said Smith.
Despite the discouraging nature of the flooding, help has been coming from all over, and Big Ass Fans is just happy to lend a fan.
