Big Ass Fans in Turlington Elementary
Trouble in Texas
Tucked away on 20 acres of hot Texas prairie land is the brand new campus of Evelyn Turlington Elementary School. The K-5 school is home to natural ponds, a century-old live oak tree and a centrally-located library created in the likeness of an equestrian arena. To provide natural lighting in the library, framed panels reflect indirect sunlight along the interior. With natural light increasing ambient temperatures, student comfort needed to be addressed without compromising the energy-efficiency of the space.
Sustainable Solution
Two 12-ft diameter Element fans were installed to provide gentle air movement reminiscent of a light outdoor breeze.
Natural Results
Considering most of the student population rides horses, the school desired a space providing the feel of an arena. The breeze provided by the silent Element fans aligns with the design goals of the Houston-based SHW Group in creating a natural learning environment for students. Element was chosen because of its long-term sustainability, innovative design and cost effectiveness.
