The Gist

Problem

GoodLife Fitness, Canada’s largest health club company, operates gyms from St. John’s to Vancouver. Like almost any gym, GoodLife struggled with hot, sweaty air in its facilities. Not only did GoodLife need an airflow solution that worked in one gym, they needed a way to get the air moving throughout its hundreds of facilities. For this, it needed reliable, powerful airflow that would stand up to decades of use, improve the look of their gyms and provide all-important evaporative cooling for their exercising patrons.

Solution

GoodLife choose Big Ass Fans to provide the cooling they needed, both in new constructions and in existing facilities. The three fans they install in every facility vastly improve indoor air quality and help keep guests cool during their workouts. Big Ass Fans has even worked side-by-side with GoodLife’s construction contractor to implement innovative airflow and lighting solutions. In one Edmonton facility, no ductwork was used in the design of the air conditioning system; rather, the fans handle the distribution of air. 185 miles (299 km) to the south, GoodLife uses both Big Ass Fans and Big Ass Lights in a Calgary gym. Markle noted, “the output of the light is simply outstanding. Big Ass Light was the only fixture that truly fit our needs.”

GoodLife Fitness, Canada’s largest health club company, operates hundreds of gyms from St. John’s to Vancouver. And like all fitness centers, GoodLife had to constantly contend with stagnant, sweat-filled air. Better circulation was a must, not only to aid the all-important evaporative cooling during workouts, but also to create a more inviting atmosphere. Smaller industrial fans weren’t up to the job, so the company went looking for a powerful fan that would stand up to decades of use. Not only did they find the fan they needed; they also found a rewarding business relationship that has branched out over the years into different fields.

Clearing the Air

GoodLife chose Big Ass Fans to provide the airflow the clubs needed, in new constructions and existing facilities. Project Manager Lindsay Markle says choosing Big Ass Fans was easy: “It came down to their durability, the easy installation, the Big Ass sales team. All those factors combined made it a perfect relationship.” Markle says the fans vastly improve indoor air quality in every GoodLife location and help keep members cool during workouts. “Everyone loves to look at them, loves the fact that they’re durable and can take a beating. They run 24 hours in most places and are simply a great piece of equipment.”

Eliminating Ductwork, Adding Lights

Thanks to the fans’ success and the strong working relationship established with GoodLife — who love the lack of middlemen — Big Ass Fans has gone on to work with the health clubs in other areas. implementing innovative airflow and lighting solutions, too. In one Edmonton facility, for example, no ductwork was used in the design of the air conditioning system; instead, the fans handle the distribution of air. And three hours to the south, GoodLife uses Big Ass Lights as well as Big Ass Fans in a Calgary gym. Markle says the lights’ output is “simply outstanding.” Also outstanding is the 66 percent annual energy savings compared to traditional lights.
