“ Schools are notorious for having marginal air quality because of the nature of their use. Therefore, we found it incredibly important to provide ample air circulation, and Big Ass Fans allowed us to achieve that. The Element fans are key to keeping a constant temperature and comfortable environment in the school's atrium. Vance Travis, AIA, NCARB, TWH Architects
After being housed in a 75-year-old building, Red Bank Middle School was due for an upgrade. Energy efficiency and sustainability were front and center for TWH Architects of Chattanooga Tenn., when it came time to build a new campus. Clerestory windows were used to reduce the demand for artificial lighting; however, the two-story atrium space created at the school’s center was going to pose air movement problems along with air quality issues.
Red Bank Middle School’s design team knew they could combat the problem of stagnant, stale air with the use of Big Ass Fans®. Three 16-ft (4.8m) Element fans were installed in the school’s atrium, providing destratification in the winter months, gentle breezes for added comfort in the warmer months and enhanced indoor air-quality year round. Working in tandem with the school’s geothermal heating and cooling system, the silent and durable Element fans create a comfortable and sustainable learning environment for the students of Red Bank Middle School.
